The Magazine Creation Journey

I had the pleasure of working with The Belize Hotel Association (BHA), a non-profit, non-government organization that is Belize's oldest private sector tourism organization. For five years with the BHA on this project, I was responsible for overseeing the branding and publication process from start to finish.

The process typically began around 3-4 months before the publication deadline with a series of planning and prep meetings with the BHA team. During these meetings, we discussed the theme content for the magazine, budgets, and established a timeline for completion.

One of the most critical aspects of the project was meeting deadlines. I worked closely with the BHA team and other stakeholders to ensure that each stage of the process was completed on time, from content creation to print production to distribution.

My work began with selecting an image for the cover of the magazine each year, which involved picking a local photographer and coming up with a theme that would capture the essence of Belize's tourism industry. I then worked remotely with the guide staff to create forms for data capture, listing layout, approval, editorials, and proofing. This involved working collaboratively with the staff to ensure that the magazine accurately reflected the BHA's mission and goals.

From Concept to Print

Once the content was finalized, I oversaw the print production process, including press proofs, thousands of copies for travel shows, international forums, and consulates, and distribution of the magazine to BHA members and industry partners. This involved coordinating with print vendors, shipping companies, and other stakeholders to ensure that the magazine was delivered on time and in top condition.

Creating a Must-Read Travel Publication

The impact of the magazine on the tourism and hospitality industry in Belize was significant. By showcasing the best of Belize's tourism industry, the magazine helped to attract more visitors to the country and promote local businesses. It also provided a platform for hoteliers to share their experiences and insights with others in the industry.
